Full Sessions vs. Mini Sessions: Which Do I Choose?

I get so many questions about mini sessions vs. full sessions when clients are looking to book a family photo session. What is a mini session? Can we really get good photos in 20 minutes? Can I schedule a mini session whenever and wherever I want? Read on to find the answers to all your questions, and reach out if you have any questions that I didn’t answer! Let's break it down:

Mini Sessions: Quick and Convenient

Let's start with the mini sessions, a whirlwind of fun packed into fifteen to twenty minutes. These sessions are like lightning rounds of photography, designed for families on the go. Mini sessions are arranged by me for a designated date, and take place at a single location selected by me. These sessions are tightly scheduled, back-to-back, ensuring maximum efficiency for everyone, with the set date, location, and times optimized for convenience.

Historically I offer spring, summer, fall, and holiday session events along with specialty location sessions including greenhouse and sunflower field.

In these quick-paced sessions, we aim for the essentials: the full family portrait with everybody looking at camera, individual shots of the kiddos, sibling photo, mom and dad together, and perhaps a quick snap of mom and dad each with the little ones. Think of it as a crash course in capturing those classic moments, ideal for updating your family album or sending out those gorgeous holiday cards.

Pros of Mini Sessions:

  • Fast and efficient, ideal for families with older kids, unamused dads, or busy schedules.

  • Focuses on traditional poses, perfect for holiday cards and wall displays.

  • Scheduled during optimal seasons for picturesque backdrops.

Full Sessions: Delving into the Heart of Your Family

Now, let's talk about full sessions. Clocking in at around an hour (though I’m not actually clock-watching!) these sessions offer a deeper dive into your family's story. We work together to find the perfect spot to bring your vision to life. Full sessions offer versatility in location, whether it's amidst the vibrant bustle of downtown, the beauty of a park, or the personal setting of your own home for a cozy lifestyle session. Additionally, they provide the opportunity to capture family traditions, such as baking cookies or enjoying a fun pizza night together.

We kick things off with the classics: posed family portraits, sibling shots, and maybe a romantic moment or two for the parents. But here's where the magic happens: once we've nailed those traditional shots, we have the luxury of time to capture the candid, playful moments that truly define your family dynamic.

From kids frolicking in the fields to tender moments between parents and little ones, full sessions are all about capturing the essence of your family. They're perfect for those who crave a mix of posed perfection and spontaneous joy, whether you're celebrating a milestone or simply cherishing the everyday moments.

Pros of Full Sessions:

  • Allows for a more relaxed pace, perfect for capturing candid moments and family dynamics.

  • Ideal for larger families, young children, maternity shoots, and seniors.

  • Provides a variety of images, from classic poses to authentic candid shots.

Choosing Your Perfect Session

Ultimately, whether you opt for a mini session or a full session depends on your family's preferences and needs (and my current mini offerings!). If you're after quick, timeless portraits for your wall or holiday cards, a mini session may be just the ticket. But if you crave a deeper dive into your family's story, complete with candid moments and cherished memories, a full session might be more your speed.

Whichever you choose, know that I'm here to capture those special moments with warmth, professionalism, and a sprinkle of fun.
