For many moms, choosing outfits is the most stressful part of planning family photos.

You want everyone to look coordinated but not too "matchy matchy." You want your kids to look like themselves, your husband to wear something he'll actually be comfortable in, and you want to feel beautiful in front of the camera.

The good news it doesn't have to be that complicated.

Start With One Outfit You Love

Instead of trying to shop for everyone at once, choose one outfit that you absolutely love—and that should be you, mama!

Find something you feel beautiful and comfortable wearing. That could be a a flowy maxi dress, your favorite jeans with a cozy sweater, or something a little more dressed up, but our outfit becomes the foundation for everyone else's.

From there, pull colors from your outfit to build the rest of the family's wardrobe.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Forget the days of matching white shirts and blue jeans.

Instead, choose two or three complementary colors and mix in a few neutral tones. This creates a timeless vibe while allowing everyone's personality to shine.

One of my favorite tricks is to start with a patterned piece like a floral dress or plaid shirt and use the colors from the pattern to build everyone else's outfits.

Let Everyone Look Like Themselves

One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to force everyone into clothes that don't feel like "them." I do it too! But I’m getting better. :)

If your daughter lives in twirly tulle dresses, let her wear one. If your son is happiest in suspenders or boots, embrace it. If your husband has never worn a blazer a day in his life, family photos probably aren't the day to start.

Comfort Creates Genuine Smiles

The best photos happen when people can move, play, hug, and laugh without worrying about uncomfortable clothes.

Choose outfits that fit well, allow movement, and make everyone feel like themselves. Comfortable kids are happy kids. Comfortable parents are more relaxed. Trust me, I’ve seen too many toddlers freak out over itchy sweaters or tight shoes.

Layers and Texture Add Interest

You don't need bold colors to create beautiful photos.

Texture can do a lot of the work for you.

Think knit sweaters, linen shirts, lace, denim jackets, cozy cardigans, or soft cotton dresses. Layers create depth and movement without making your outfits feel busy.

Accessories like jewelry, hats, or hair bows can add personality without stealing the spotlight.

Patterns Are Your Friend

Yes, you can absolutely wear patterns.

Florals, subtle stripes, plaids, and small prints all photograph beautifully when paired with coordinating solids and textures.

The key is keeping the overall color palette cohesive so the focus stays on your family rather than competing patterns.

Don't Forget Your Shoes

Shoes are often the last thing families think about, but they can tie everything together.

Neutral sandals, boots, loafers, flats, or clean sneakers usually photograph beautifully. Try to avoid brightly colored athletic shoes or heavily worn footwear that can distract from an otherwise polished look.
